Calzones

Calzones

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf frozen whole wheat bread dough, thawed
  • 3/4 pound ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1/2 tsp. dried basil
  • 1 can pizza sauce
  • 1 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup diced green peppers
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrot
  • 1 can sliced black olives, drained
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook just until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the diced onion, pepper, mushrooms, and shredded carrot, and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the ground beef or turkey and dried basil; cook until meat is browned. Drain any excess fat from the cooked meat mixture and place it in a large bowl. Allow the meat mixture to cool slightly. Mix in the shredded cheese, pizza sauce, and black olives.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Brush a cookie sheet with olive oil. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each piece of dough into 9-inch circles. Divide filling evenly among the 8 rounds; fold in half and pinch the edges to seal. Place the calzones on the prepared cookie sheet and brush with beaten egg. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the dough has browned and cooked through.
  3. Serve calzones with additional warmed pizza sauce if desired. Cooked and cooled calzones can be frozen and reheated to serve later.
