My love for cooking and everything in the kitchen (except for maybe doing the dishes!) started with baking. I was about 7 years old -- I can still remember the cookbook. Without imposing on any copyrights, let's just say it involved a large bird, and he had a friend that ate nothing but cookies and another that lived in a trash can. And I'm old enough that his little red friend hadn't been, uh, "born" yet. Anyway, back to the cookbook. It had easy recipes in it for little hands. My mom didn't want to teach me how to use the mixer at that point (a wise decision), so my younger sister and I used to mash the butter and sugar together with our hands. I'm not sure how much stayed in the bowl and how much went onto the floor or in our tummies, but we made that sugar cookie recipe many times.
Needless to say, many of my kitchen adventures were built around baking early on. I was older when I moved on to main dishes and other things. I hope that you build some family memories in the kitchen, too. Whether it's baking cookies for a holiday or "just because," or fixing family dinner, it's worth it. You will not only be creating family memories, but giving your kids a valuable skill.
Enjoy!
